The NATO Support and Procurement Agency has placed a new order worth approximately 40 million Euros for several hundred Exail K-Ster mine neutralization vehicles.
This procurement is part of a framework agreement established in 2024, designed to provide Alliance navies with a streamlined process for the rapid acquisition of these systems.
The move reflects a broader trend among European maritime forces to modernize Mine Counter-Measure (MCM) capabilities by adopting autonomous technologies. As a regional leader in the sector, Exail is central to this transition toward unmanned operations intended to increase both safety and efficiency in the field.
By expanding the K-Ster fleets within NATO, the order aims to improve the security of sea lines of communication and the protection of critical maritime infrastructure. These efforts are viewed as strategic priorities for European nations seeking enhanced control over the underwater domain. The initiative also highlights the availability of sovereign industrial solutions where the manufacturer maintains mastery over the critical building blocks of modern countermeasure systems.
The hardware for this order will be manufactured at assembly lines in Ostend, Belgium. This facility, which opened in 2022 and is now fully operational, was established specifically to support major MCM modernization programs.
Jérôme Bendell, Head of Exail Maritime Systems Business line, commented, “We are very proud to see European navies renewing their confidence in our mine neutralization solutions. This new order confirms both the proven operational reliability of K-Ster and Exail’s central role in supporting the modernization of MCM capabilities for NATO navies. With our Ostend site now fully scaled up, we are prepared to support navies in the deployment of next-generation MCM capabilities.”
