Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has completed the first AC-130J aircraft for U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) under the AC/MC 130J Radio Frequency Countermeasures (RFCM) program.

The RFCM suite, integrated by SNC, operates the ALQ-251 system developed by Northrop Grumman to provide threat detection, precision geolocation and active countermeasure capabilities, giving Special Operation Forces (SOF) operators accurate and timely situational awareness information and improving aircraft survivability.

SNC used its electromagnetic and aerodynamic modeling expertise to maximize performance of the installed system. Advanced system processing and robust spectrum support significantly improve aircraft survivability in the modern threat environment. SNC’s approach to aircraft survivability emphasizes full-platform integration leveraging platform datalinks, integrated processing and common tactical display systems.

“SNC is excited to deliver this critical capability to the SOF warfighter,” said Brendan Walsh, vice president of programs for SNC’s Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance, Aviation and Security (IAS) business area. “With this delivery, USSOCOM can gain confidence operating in the modern, ever-evolving threat environment thanks to the protection RFCM provides.”

This aircraft, the first AC-130J in the Engineering and Manufacturing Development program phase, will continue to support upcoming developmental and operational test objectives.

SNC is a leading integrator for special mission aircraft, including USSOCOM AC‑130J and MC‑130J. As a significant supplier to the AC-130J Ghostrider Precision Strike Package and the prime contractor for the MC-130J Commando II Airborne Mission Networking systems, SNC brings novel approaches to integrating innovative technology into airborne platforms.

“SNC is committed to providing our customers fully integrated systems that incorporate open architecture principles,” said Mark Williams, senior vice president strategy. “In this way, SNC supports maximized innovation, enhanced competition and reduced system lifecycle costs to enable our customers’ and partners’ continued success.”
