Discover cutting-edge solutions from leading global suppliers
SCD has launched the Robin family of 12µm VGA Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) uncooled detectors and thermal cores designed for high-performance thermal imaging in modern defense operations.
The new product line is based on Vanadium Oxide (VOx) microbolometer technology and achieves a thermal time constant (Tau) of ≤7ms. This response speed is intended to provide sharp imagery during rapid motion, supporting the requirements of high-dynamic environments such as missile seekers, loitering munitions, and agile unmanned aerial system (UAS) payloads.
Technical specifications for the components in the Robin family include a Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NETD) of less than 50mK at the detector level and less than 35mK at the core level. These metrics are designed to maintain image clarity and sensitivity in complex operational conditions. The units are available in several configurations, including standalone detectors, compact video modules, and fully integrated thermal cores, allowing for use in armored vehicle situational awareness, missile warning systems (MWS), and thermal weapon sights.
The design aims to reduce the weight and complexity of stabilization systems by providing clear thermal imagery in motion-intensive scenarios. This approach minimizes the reliance on heavy gimbals and extensive post-processing, which can streamline the integration and deployment of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems.
To support global defense programs, the manufacturer is utilizing automated manufacturing capabilities to ensure consistent quality and long-term supply. The development roadmap for this technology includes a transition toward smaller pixel pitches and architectures capable of supporting onboard processing and real-time decision-making for autonomous sensing applications.
“The Robin family represents a strategic step in expanding SCD’s leadership into the uncooled infrared domain,” said Kobi Zaushnizer, CEO of SCD. “By leveraging decades of infrared expertise and advanced ROIC capabilities, we are introducing a new generation of 12µm solutions that combine ultra-fast thermal response, high image quality, and production scalability. This enables our customers to develop and deploy next-generation EO/IR systems with greater confidence, operational performance and supply assurance.”
