Security Camera Image Processing Systems Overview

Image analysis software enables movement or intrusion detection without the need to install any additional security systems, such as infrared barriers, motion detectors or door sensors at those locations.

Conventional cameras and/or thermal cameras can be used for these applications depending on the requirements of the operation parameters, which include: 

Location – is it an interior space with stable conditions or outdoors where the atmospheric conditions could seriously affect or even alter the images that are captured? 

The distance that needs to be protected – conventional cameras have a range of 0-50m, while thermal cameras can cover distances of up to 200m. In some cases, thermal cameras can be programmed to cover greater distances, although these will tend to provide very low quality images.

The use of thermal cameras helps with detection in areas where you need to distinguish between an object, or equipment, and people especially in areas with a conventional camera won’t work, like looking into a tunnel or if the area is used at night.

Imagine processing software constructs an image via dynamic range compression algorithms and can detect a person entering a facility which then generates an alarm signal that is sent to the control centre. 

Three types of detection are used: excision, pre-alarm and inhibition, using cycles of time from 40 milliseconds up to 2.5 seconds for detecting the behaviours of people.

The clearest images are captured by using the latest high definition, high dynamic range CMOS image sensor technology. The most up to date image sensors use adaptive non-linear exposure techniques that can exceed 115dB of dynamic range (19-20 bits). Real time image dynamic range processing requires massive, flexible, parallel processing in a small, power-efficient footprint. FPGAs are suitable devices to enable cameras with these features. Image processing can be also done using ASICs or CPUs.
