Mil-Grade PCBs

Military-grade electronic components must be of the highest quality, easily compatible with other parts, and capable of performing in harsh environmental conditions.

Standardization is necessary in order to achieve this compatibility and to ensure that the components meet the requirements, reliability, total cost of ownership, compatibility with logistics systems, and similar defense-related objectives. 

To achieve this, the U.S. Department of Defense created specific military standards known as MIL-STD.

There are five types of defense standards:

  • Design criteria 
  • Interface 
  • Manufacturing process 
  • Standard practice
  • Test method 

Standards that are specifically applicable to PCB components include:

  • MIL-STD-202G: A test method for electronic and electrical component parts
  • MIL-STD-750-2: A test method for semiconductor devices
  • MIL-STD-883: A test method for microcircuits

Generally the top military-grade PCBs conform to specific constraints concerning annular ring width and diameter, dielectric thickness, and the clearance between the drilled via to copper pad.

MIL-STD electronics can be used in applications such as communications, navigation, and computing.
