Green Ammunition

Green Ammunition Overview

Green Bullets & Ammo

Green ammunition, also known as green bullets or green ammo, refers to non-toxic small arms munitions. The U.S. Department of Defense initiated the program to remove hazardous materials from ammunition manufacturing after studying the damaging impact of these materials throughout the ammunition lifecycle.

The implementation of green ammo seeks to reduce contamination, harmful emissions and waste materials by seeking environmentally friendly alternatives. This will also significantly reduce the time and costs associated with the disposal of unused munitions.

Enhanced Performance Rounds

The removal of heavy metals from projectiles and the production process has led to the development of lead-free cartridges with the potential to greatly reduce environmental impact whilst achieving enhanced performance. Green ammunition seeks to remove the following from small caliber rounds:

  • ozone-depleting substances
  • volatile organic compounds
  • heavy metals such as lead
